Simple Gmax Model

Simple Gmax Model

After watching Bill Womacks tutorial videos at fsdeveloper and fsdevconf on YouTube, I got enough of a handle on making a basic house model, UVW unwrapping and then texturing. Heres what I managed to come up with in a fairly short time:

Simple House in Gmax

The steps I followed:

  • Start with a box, convert to poly and then extrude from the top to make the attic space
  • Collapse vertices to make the peak
  • Delete polys that will not be seen (floor and roof)
  • Make another box for the roof big enough that it overhangs and move it to the peak, convert to poly
  • Slice the box and in front view select side vertices and drag down so the roof connects to the building
  • Use a boolean to union the building and roof
  • Delete the underside roof polys (inside the building - not the overhang)
  • Change the boolean object to poly
  • Select polys to receive the same material and set material IDs
  • Add UVW Map modifer, set to box and adjust dimensions to be larger than house bounding box. Tutorials Ive seen recommend to make the Box map to be cubical, so use the longest dimension of your model plus a small margin and use that dimension for all sides of box map.
  • Add UVW Unwrap, Edit and scale/move the UVWs to fit in the box
  • Take a screenshot of UVW editor window, paste into Gimp or Photoshop, crop and scale to 1024x1024
  • Use cgtextures.com to get some nice textures and copy/paste and tile over UVWs, save PSD file
  • In Gmax, create material, set bitmap to the PSD file and apply
You can continue to edit the PSD and reload using the Material editor. I tried using drop shadows and other suggestions from Bills fsdevconf texturing tutorial.
